Downey, California
QUALITY OF LIFE

Big City Atmosphere... Small Town Living
Downey is a unique Southern California community that combines the best of both large and small. It is an active city of 92,000, yet has many advantages of a small town. Downey is recognized for its desired location, fine residential neighborhoods, and family lifestyle. It is a place of pride, history, involvement, and community. Historically, Downey is one of the oldest communities in Southern California, founded in the post-Civil War days. The community is especially proud of its history and how it has shaped the city over the years.

Sage, Quiet Community
Downey is known for its quiet and safe community. The people here are genuinely concerned about their community and committed to keeping it safe for all to enjoy.

Affluent Neighborhoods
The city maintains a broad range of housing options offering a "quality of life" that many thought was impossible to maintain in this fast-paced region.

Community Involvement
Civic pride is felt throughout the community by both residents and businesses. It is an active community where prize-winning rose floats have been designed, decorated, and continuously entered in Pasadena's Tournament of Roses since 1955. They are completely financed, constructed, and decorated by volunteers. Our outstanding YMCA continues to be one of the best. It is also operated by community volunteers and contributions. We are a city of many fine churches that offer a variety of religious and social activities that remind you of small town living. Here citizens take pride in calling Downey home. Our unique community spirit and involvement is unmatched by any other community in Southern California.

Award Winning Schools
Downey's outstanding school district has won 4 California "Distinguished School" awards. A Downey school was recently one of only two in California to be awarded for academic excellence. Quality education is provided both publicly and privately. In addition to our top rated public schools, we also have many fine private and parochial schools.

Quality Police
Downey is a full service city with its own quality police and fire departments. Downey consistently commits towards the best public protection for all of its citizens. The city staffs 120 sworn officers to provide continued protection towards a safe community.

Fire Safety
The Downey Fire Department has four stations to serve the city. The City is proud of the fact that it has consistently maintained a Class 2 rating, a factor that leads to lower insurance premiums for business. Downey maintains one of the few urban search and rescue units in the county.

Recreation
Downey has 13 parks, extensive recreation programs and a model city library. The City and its many citizen volunteers support an art museum, historical society, symphony, live theater, community pool, and two public golf courses. The City of Downey's popular Rio Hondo Golf Course completed a $5 million renovation to become one of the most challenging and attractive courses in the area.
