Holiday & New Year Greetings from Cal State Xpress

Dear Customers and Friends,

We have many things to be thankful for this year. First and foremost are our Employees and Customers. Our Employee's dedication and our Customer's loyalty are never taken for granted. Throughout the year, Cal State Xpress has given our support to many worthy causes. The American Red Cross and Rotary International are good examples. We have supported and contributed to the on-going community programs of the Rotary Club of Downey and the Rotary Club of South Gate, along with many other local programs.

This year, as in the past, we are giving an additional contribution to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army as an appropriate way for us to continue our Holiday Tradition of giving to the needy and less fortunate. These contributions are being made in the name of our Customers and Employees.

We hope that the Spirit of the Holidays will be with you throughout the year and good health and happiness will be yours to enjoy.

Employee Recognition

The Passing of Glen Wilson; A Good Friend and a Good Man

On December 1, 2000 Glen Wilson passed away after a 4-year fight for life. In September 1996 Glen had his second massive heart attack and was never able to return to work. Glen was born in Bakersfield, California on July 13, 1947. He leaves a loving wife, four children, one grandchild and friends to numerous to count, friends and people whose lives he touched.

Glen worked for L.A. Xpress / Cal State Xpress from the very first day we were open. He handled the operations for the Company. He excelled in his job due to his leadership ability. He excelled as a person due to his understanding, kindness and compassion for everyone he touched. We often called him the "Salt of Life". This title was bestowed upon him by his friends and co-worked because of his genuine caring for the people who surrounded him. Glen was an avid sportsman who enjoyed all types of hunting and fishing. Some of our most cherished memories are of the stories he told about these outings.

Glen touched the lives of so many people. His work ethic, honesty, integrity and quiet dignity were examples of how to live your life. His sense of humor was amazing, and always very well received. As with most great people, he set himself apart by living the "Basics". If he said he was going to do something, it got done. His word was his bond, and you could bank on it.

Glen's friendship and devotion to family was second to none. It was our honor and privilege to have known him. He will truly be missed.

Peg Vesprini Returns to Cal State Xpress

We are pleased to announce that Peg Vesprini, our old friend and Financial Director, has returned to Cal State Xpress. Peg moved to Michigan last year to be closer to her family and test their job market. Peg's responsibilities include accounts payable, month and year end financial reports and special projects. All of us at Cal State Xpress are happy to have Peg back in the "Family".

Holiday Hangover Remedies

The ancient Romans prescribed eating fried canaries to cure hangovers. Fortunately - although none has been proven 100 percent effective - there are plenty of modern remedies.

The first is to REHYDRATE with water, fruit juice or broth, since many hangover symptoms are the result of dehydration.

Second is to CONSIDER taking Vitamin B6 or ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve). Taken at the time of imbibing, they may have a minor effect in reducing the severity of a hangover.
Warning: Always consult your Doctor before taking any medicine.

Third is to try FRUCTOSE, the sugar found in honey and many fruits. Some studies have shown that it accelerates the removal of alcohol from the bloodstream, although other studies have found no effect.

The BEST REMEDY. The only surefire cure for a hangover is not to get one in the first place. Avoid overindulgence, especially of darker drinks such as red wine, bourbon and brandy. They contain congeners, substances that can produce particularly bad hangovers.

AND, BE SMART AND BE SAFE: At parties, alternate alcoholic beverages with fruit juice or club soda... add lots of ice to mixed drinks...sip drinks instead of gulping them. And PLEASE Don't drink and drive.

And now a word or two about that Holiday Weight Gain that we all fear. It's commonly thought that the average American gains five pounds during the holidays. But a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that the actual gain is only 1-2 pounds. The real problem is most adults who gain that weight never lose it.

A good suggestion is: Watch what you eat at the buffet table, but put your exercise plan into action. If you start now to shed those extra holiday pounds, you'll be leaner as you live longer.
